Institutional Design

In a group of three, my partners and I explored best design practices for a sensory wing addition to Sgt. William Carney Memorial Academy Elementary School in New Bedford, MA. Best practices were achieved through an extensive research and programming phase.

Concept

Communities come with many diverse backgrounds and personalities. It is important to create unity and stability among all so that creativity and growth of all individuals can flourish. Four animals will be mascots and symbolize a feeling or psychological response for the design.

Historical, interactive and observational research was conducted and included questionnaires, interviews, and research of primary sources related to the psychology of ASD.

The design for the ABA space incorporated both private spaces for one on one work and also open collaboration among students and staff.

Each of these categories are incorporated into the design of the spaces.
